Meet Clasina Roodt, Radiation Safety Advisor
Clasina Roodt is a Certified Radiation Safety Advisor (ARPAB); Technical Lead; and Senior Metallurgist, who has significantly impacted the mining industry over her 26-year career across Australia, Sierra Leone and South Africa.
Her experience includes specialisation in open pit mining operations relating to copper, magnetite, phosphates and mineral sands (titanium and zircon), both in metallurgy and radiation protection. Her experience in radiation protection focuses on extensive radiological impact assessment (RIA) skills through human health (RESRAD) and non-human biota (ERICA) modelling; technical support to the business (operations, projects, approvals, rehabilitation, closure); and radiation advocacy pursuant to naturally occurring radioactive material (NORM).
She has in-depth knowledge of:
- Mineral processing (flotation and comminution)
- Research and development
- project management
- Environmental management
- Radiation protection
- Radiation risk assessments
ARPS WA Presentation 27 March 2025: Radiation Modelling of NORM in Tailings to Predict Long-term Radiation Protection
“The safe disposal of tailings from mining operations, especially those with long-lived radioactive materials, requires careful risk assessment and management. Understanding the characteristics of the tailings is crucial to meeting these goals.
Radiological models are used to predict potential doses to humans and wildlife, guiding the design of tailings storage facilities. Design principles to mitigate risk may include capping to protect against erosion and radiation exposure, liners to prevent groundwater contamination, and physical barriers to deter intrusion. These considerations aim to ensure the long-term safety of tailing facilities and minimise radiological impacts on the environment and human health.”
