Course Overview

Advance your career in radiation safety with our comprehensive NORM Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) Training Course. Designed for personnel working with Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material (NORM), this course provides the essential knowledge and practical skills required to safely manage NORM in accordance with Australian regulatory requirements.

Whether you work in mining, mineral processing, oil and gas, waste management or other industries where NORM is present, this training provides a recognised pathway towards becoming a competent Radiation Safety Officer.

Why Complete NORM RSO Training?

Under the Radiation Safety Act 1975, NORM must be managed under the supervision of a competent and licensed person. Organisations handling NORM require appropriately trained personnel who understand radiation safety principles, risk management and regulatory compliance.

This course equips participants with the skills and knowledge to:

  • Work safely with Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material (NORM)
  • Understand radiation hazards and exposure pathways
  • Conduct NORM assessments and measurements
  • Apply radiation protection principles in the workplace
  • Follow approved radiation management plans
  • Support compliance with radiation safety legislation
  • Progress towards Radiation Safety Officer responsibilities

Participants will learn from experienced industry professionals and gain practical knowledge they can apply immediately in the workplace.

About this course

This course is aimed at personnel working with NORM (Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material) in their workplace who are seeking a pathway to becoming a Radiation Safety Officer (RSO).

It is a requirement under the Radiation Safety Act 1975 that NORM is managed under the supervision of a competent and licensed person. Licensing for NORM requires a degree of mentoring and experience prior to working autonomously.

This course provides participants with the skills and knowledge required to work safely with NORM under the guidance of an NORM RSO and in accordance with an existing radiation management plan.

Course Structure

  • Introduction to Radiation
  • Radiation in Perspective: Understand radiation sources, background radiation and occupational exposure considerations.
  • Radiation Dose, Measurement and Protection Principles: Learn how radiation is measured and controlled using industry best-practice radiation protection principles.
  • NORM Assessment and Measurement: Develop practical skills in identifying, assessing and measuring NORM hazards.
  • Handling, Storage and Transport of NORM: Understand safe procedures for the handling, storage and transportation of radioactive materials.
  • Regulatory Requirements and Compliance: Learn the legislative and regulatory requirements governing NORM management in Australia.
  • Radiation Management Procedures: Apply workplace radiation management plans and operational controls.
  • NORM Incident Response: Develop the knowledge required to respond effectively to radiation incidents and abnormal situations.

Assessment & Certification

Participants complete a range of practical exercises, workplace scenarios and knowledge assessments throughout the course. Competency is assessed against applicable regulatory and industry requirements.

Upon successful completion, participants will receive a Certificate of Completion demonstrating their achievement in NORM Radiation Safety Officer training.

Requirements for RSO appointment or licensing may include (but are not limited to):

  • Relevant formal qualifications
  • Demonstrated industry experience
  • Additional radiation safety training
  • Approval by the applicable regulator (RCWA / LGIRS)

Participants seeking to become an RSO should refer directly to the relevant regulator for current eligibility criteria.
